Laser Trabeculoplasty for Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a comprehensive term for a number of eye disorders involving increased intraocular pressure. The various disorders classified under glaucoma are divided into two types: open-angle and closed-angle glaucoma.
Open angle glaucoma is relatively painless and occurs over time. The symptoms for open-angle glaucoma are less severe than closed-angle and generally do not appear until the disease is well underway. Closed-angle glaucoma has a rapid onset and its symptoms involve eye pain, redness, nausea, and vomiting. Sufferers of closed-angle glaucoma require immediate medical attention.
Depending on the severity of the glaucoma, certain medications may be prescribed to alleviate the pressure inside the eye or in some cases, trabeculoplasty surgery may be recommended.
Trabeculoplasty is a procedure where a small opening is made in the scleral wall of the eye that allows for aqueous fluid to drain, relieving intraocular pressure. Advancements in laser surgery have improved the success rate of trabeculoplasty and it is now the most commonly performed type of invasive surgery for glaucoma.
There are two types of Laser Trabeculoplasty for Glaucoma:
Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT) which is used to treat open-angle glaucoma with a 50-μm argon laser that is pointed at the trabecular meshwork to open the mesh and allow aqueous fluid to drain and relieve intraocular pressure.
Nd: YAG Laser Trabeculoplasty is a newer type of laser glaucoma surgery that utilizes a “cold laser” that affects the melanin deposits in the trabecular meshwork to encourage opening of the mesh for drainage. The Nd: YAG Laser Trabeculoplasty is easier on the eye than ALT surgery and can be repeated a number of times, while ALT surgery can only be performed twice.
Laser Trabeculoplasty for Glaucoma is generally only performed on one eye at a time due to the loss of vision immediately after the procedure.
How Much Does Laser Trabeculoplasty for Glaucoma Cost?
The cost of Laser Trabeculoplasty for Glaucoma can vary based on your individual circumstances. The number of eyes the procedure will be performed on, the choice of clinic, and geographic location can all affect the overall cost of the procedure.
